Demon Hot Shot Radar Puck Review

Today we have a review of the Demon hot shot puck, this puck was designed to measure the speed of your shot and display it in the center of the puck.

How the puck works

The puck uses a sensor to determine when you shoot the puck, and when it hits the target. It then uses the time it took to leave your stick and hit the target to determine how hard your shot was. In order to be accurate you need to set the puck up first

Setting the puck up

In order to set the puck up you need to input some settings, you need to select the distance you will be shooting from (four distances available) and also what type of shot you will be using. (full details in video)

How to get an accurate reading

In order to get an accurate reading from the hot shot puck you need to pick the correct setting, shooting from the exact distance you chose on the puck, and shoot against a hard target (a wall or piece of plywood).

Overall Thoughts

The Demon Hot Shot puck is good as a novelty puck or a toy for kids, but if you want a serious tool to improve your shot I would recommend a radar gun.

I prefer a radar gun as I find a radar gun very easy to use, and accurate no matter what shot or distance you shoot from. A radar gun will also allow you to shoot many pucks at once and get instant feedback. However with the radar puck you need to retrieve and check your speed after each shot.

The one major issue with practicing stickhandling and shooting off-ice is that there is very little movement. Stickhandling off the ice will still help improve your game, but wouldn’t it be nice if you could recreate the feeling of skating while stickhandling? That is the exact reason why I decided to try using a slideboard with a roll-up shooting pad. The result was great so I thought I would share a video sharing some drills you can do, and how they look with a shooting pad / slide board combo

Flypuck VS Green Biscuit

We get a lot of questions when it comes to picking the best off ice training puck so we decided to do a video about which off ice puck is the best. After thoroughly reviewing the Green Biscuit and Flypuck and using these pucks a lot we were able to determine the advantages and disadvantages of both pucks.

Advantages of the Flypuck

Comes in three different weights (work your muscles, and your repetition)
Very durable design
Better for shooting
Slides well on smooth surfaces

Disadvantages of the Flypuck

Even though it is more durable than the Green Biscuit it is still possible to break it with a very hard shot to the post (not likely to happen with younger players though)
Tends to flip up when used on rough surfaces like cement and asphalt

Advantages of the Green Biscuit

Slides great on ALL surfaces (slides better than any other off ice puck)
A bit lighter than a normal puck, but with the added friction of off-ice surfaces it feels heavier so it feels a lot like a puck does on the ice
Great for developing soft hands

Disadvantages of the Green Biscuit

Not as durable as the fly puck
More likely to break if you shoot it again a hard object (goal post)
Two piece design makes it a bit noisy

Having “quick hands” or fast hands in hockey is seen as a great asset to any hockey player. Luckily this is something that you can practice at home with nothing more than a hockey stick and some stickhandling balls. There are two types of stickhandling balls that I like, the smart hockey balls and the wooden stickhandling balls. The smart hockey balls are nice because they have a similar feel as a puck does on the ice, and I like the wooden stickhandling balls because they are nice and light, and very easy to handle.

Improve Your Stickhandling with the Flypucks

The Flypuck is an off-ice training puck that you can use to improve your stickhandling and shooting. In the video below I show you a few different drills you can do with the Flypuck to improve your stickhandling skills.

The Flypuck comes in three different weights, 4oz, 6oz and 8oz. This means you can get a puck that is lighter than a puck, the same weight and 2 ounces heavier. You can stickhandle using the different weighted pucks to help improve your stickhandling in different ways. A light puck is good for repetition and quick hands, and a heavier puck is good to build your stickhandling muscles and patterns.

Tips to Improve Your Game

Stickhandling

Practice controlling the puck around your entire body
Practice quick back and forth movements (dribbling the puck) and practice wide movements
Cup the puck on your forehand and backhand
Practice reaching out as far as you can to each side while still controlling the puck
Practice for 10-20 minutes a day and continue to try new things

Shooting

Proper technique is the most important factor for power and accuracy
Shoot 100 pucks a day to develop your shooting muscles
Continue to refine your technique as you shoot
Use a radar gun to help you improve your power
Having a smooth surface too shoot off will help make your practice more like the ice, and protect the bottom of your blade

Passing

Use a passing kit, or pass rebounder or pass a ball against a wall
Roll your hands over during the follow through and point the toe at your target
Cup the puck while giving and receiving the pass
When receiving a pass be sure to cradle the puck (gradually slow it down)

Improve your Game with a Hockey Shooting Pad

If you want to practice your shooting and stickhandling it helps to have a nice smooth surface to practice on. Ice has very low friction and the puck will slide very easily, but if you practice on cement or other rough surfaces the puck will not slide easily and it is also hard on your sticks. It is important to make your off-ice practice area as ice-like as possible so that you can easily transfer what you have learned off the ice onto the ice.
